Everyone who met Boova was
captivated by his personality even if they were not a long
eared lover lol.... he wasn't famous, he didn't win any
races and he didn't have an impressive pedigree but he would
very quickly steal your heart.
Boova's story... He was
rescued from slaughter, to be specific he was heading to
Canada for slaughter for human consumption. Boova was a
work mule a cross between a mammoth jack and a Belgian
mare. This cross is commonly used for Amish plow and work
horses. It was a hot August Monday at the New Holland
auction we often attend the auction weekly to help slaughter
bound horses and since there was no school - summertime lol
Selina our youngest daughter and well known lover of
longears attended with me. After the sale we went to look
at the horses who were purchased by a specific kill buyer
and doomed to slaughter without our intervention. We had
"save from slaughter funds" but they were specifically
designated for Saddlebreds and as I was on the phone
negotiating for two Saddlebred lives Selina was befriending
an aged mule gelding who stood tied and trying to hide in a
corner. I didn't notice at first because I was so intent on
the conversation I was engaged in and by the time I looked
over a bond stronger than you could image had formed in
moments... when I looked over here is what I saw... Boova
has hound dog eyes they droop on the bottom and he just
looks super sad to beging with now that you have that
picture add a blonde haired blue eyed angel who you love so
much petting this incredibly sad face both staring at you
and then you see tears starting to roll down her face... it
broke my heart into a million pieces... well then her
little voice said "mommy, you just can't let them kill him -
please help him". That was it I said to the kill buyer
"and how much for the old mule"?? Well the rescue didn't
have funds to save him but we had anniversary celebration
money saved lol... so when I offloaded Boova at home I said
oh honey "Happy Anniversary"
Boova was going to remain a
resident - but we met a couple at the World Horse Expo in
Harrsiburg who came out to visit AC4H and they had no
intentions on falling in love with a mule but their
grandkids, just like Selina formed a bond in moments... all
three of them were literally hanging on his legs, crawling
under him, sitting on him and Boova couldn't have been
happier rotflmao... this is what he loves - children and
babysitting. What was even funnier was the the husband had
also formed a bond with Boova and has been proudly showing
his picture around at work and just hasn't been able to get
Boova off his mind. When Selina returned home from school
that day I explained what happened and you could see how
hard it was for her but she said "Mommy if you found the
perfect home then, let him go". Well it couldn't have been
more perfect... we had waited a long time for the perfect
family and it was worth the wait. Applications were
submitted, checked, etc and it was about 3 weeks later when
pickup was arranged and it happened to be on their youngest
grandchilds birthday they waited because that is what she
wanted to do for her birthday - pick Boova up and bring him
"home". Boova is an adoption AC4H did retain ownership and
they assured Selina she could visit anytime she would like
they even offered to meet half way and take her for the
weekend with the rest of their grandchildren lol... Selina
felt just like Boova and I did that this was the perfect
family. Here are a couple of pictures the grandchildren are
not in here but the proud grandparents are and so is Selina
(left).
Hi Rick and Christy, This is an up date on Boova. He is becoming a real stinker. His gate opening skills are improving . Last nite Boova and Justin had a race our of the barn, at a short distance Boova was the winner. He is getting more and more active. He still is a big gentle giant . Samantha is riding him more and more. She wants to show him in 4-H. We thought it would only be in halter, but if he keeps up the racing the morgan, we just might show him in a western class for fun. Samantha is also going to use Justin for her mane horse for 4-H. When we are at shows we are trying to spread the word about your rescue. I already had someone who wanted to buy Justin. I really love him, I didn't think I would ever find a horse I would like as well as I do him. Peggy Sessamen |

Willie aka Joey goes home.

Wanted to share a happy ending with you guys..... the
"official story" will be out in detail for cross posting and press
release after Christine gets home and is able to put it into an email
:>) but here is a sneak peak...
About 60 days ago in the same kill pen was a paint gelding that we fundraised for he had one blue eye and one brown eye, high white socks and was a little older -had an obvious larger knee from calcification but came right to me out of the group of horses and had my heart immediately! With the help of the FOB's "Willie Nelson" (Doc Holt named him) was at AC4H safe and awaiting another chance at life. I don't know if you guys read the story of Brittany and Nicole who came from Long Island to PA to save a horse from slaughter?? If not I will post it here for you. Turns out Nicole recognized Willie as Joey from a lesson stable in LI she informed us he had even competed in the special olypics. Around the same time Christine called in tears saying that she knew the horse Willie Nelson as Joey and sent us to a website to see his picture at first we thought she had the wrong horse but she identified the brand that wasn't visable on the pictures and Nicole said she knew Christine (small world) and it was definately Joey! Christine had told the lesson barn that she wanted him if they ever wanted to sell him but they didn't call her... the next thing she knew she saw his picture on the AC4H website as saved from slaughter ... she submitted her application and today tears of joy streamed down her face when they were reunited. Willie aka Joey immediately started rubbing his head on her as if to say I remember you and you didn't forget about me! The pictures below are from this morning ...

![]() ![]() | I thought you might like another success story to add to your list - it really is proof that these are great, deserving horses and ponies you all are helping to place! Here is the buckskin pony we bought off the broker-owned page just a few months ago. She carried my 4 year old daughter in her first show and is a much-loved lesson pony. People at the show kept coming up to us and commenting on what a beautiful pony we had. She sure does clean up well - she looked like a million dollars! I will be keeping my eyes on your web pages for another golden find like her for more of my lesson kids to enjoy! Thank you again for all you do. Lillian Halvorsen

| Clay goes home!! Congrats Wendy!! |
Clay 4 yr old black and white gelding intercepted heading to auction he is broke
to ride and drive however he has been diagnosed as 100% blind. He is
incredibly gentle, non spooky and gets around incredibly well the vet feels this
was most likely genetic as there are no signs of trauma. He is a special
needs horse with an incredible personality and gets along very well as people
who have visited didn't know he was blind. Clay is reported to be a gypsy however he is not heavily feathered. He was born on a farm where they breed gypsy horses his mom is reported to be an imported English Shire and sire is supposed to be a gypsy we have no confirmation on this. We do know he is stunningly gorgeous, gentle and needed another chance.

Hi, Christy -
I wanted to take a minute to
send you some pictures of "Charlie Horse," the Belgian you found for me
about two years ago at the auction. You probably remember that you found
Charlie for me at the auction after things did not work out well with Sugar,
the Belgian mare I bought from North Dakota. Charlie was definitely a
diamond in the rough. I remember you said you were bidding against the
"meat man" that day at the auction and I am so glad you won. With a
little TLC, a little patience and a lot of food and exercise, Charlie has
turned into a wonderful, wonderful horse. He's a great trail horse and a
safe ride for anyone... kids, adults, beginners.. you name it. He is as
bomb-proof as they come and he's even helped a few "beginner" trail horses
learn the ropes out in Patapsco State Park. Everyone loves Charlie
and I am so glad you found him for me. I think Charlie is the happiest of
all and definitely the most grateful - he has a safe, happy forever home and
miles of trails to look forward to, thanks to you.
- Laurie
