| Some of the Saddlebreds Rescued.... |
To Rick, and all of the wonderful souls who help to give another life to these sweet creatures at Another Chance 4 Horses:
Eleven months ago, almost to the day, I made a journey to Bernville, PA, to bring a loving, but unfortunate soul into my life. The horse was a 12 year old registered Saddlebred gelding, undernourished, but such a kind and loving boy. When some people see the horses that rescues find and take in, they see everything wrong – the horse has been underfed, or maybe very overfed – it has a disease or needs extra hoof care. That animal has been used, abused, and worn down. ….What they don’t understand is just how much love and devotion a rescued horse can give… how very hard they will try for the person who loves them and dotes on them as they didn’t have before. And truly, how incredibly beautiful that “worn down” animal can become with a little love, and some tenderness.
Gabriel (as I’ve named him) was undernourished. His coat was dull and his ribs and hip bones were showing from being underfed. But I knew the first time I saw him what a gentle soul he was, and decided right then and there to give him the loving home he deserved. To give an idea, this is a picture taken after a couple of weeks of care at Another Chance 4 Horses (he had already put on a bit of weight). That's my mom holding him, while I took the shot.

My life and my heart have been so full ever since Gabriel came into my life. The unconditional love he expresses every day when I see him is nothing short of incredible. He knickers to me now each time I come to see him. When out in the pasture, he not only doesn't run away… he comes right to me with a soft knicker and perked ears! When I place him in the pasture, he almost always stands with me for a few minutes as if to show his appreciation and love before walking off to the herd… the affection he displays is so human, and I still can't believe how amazing he is. One of my favorite ways he shows affection is by giving me what I call "Gabriel kisses", where he nuzzles up close to me, and very gently and affectionately rubs his top lip on my cheek, nose, or forehead by moving his lip up and down. And when I hug him, he will sometimes hug me back by curling his neck around me.
To
try to describe all of the ways in which he shows his love for me would take
far too long. But, he seems to know, deep in his heart, that all of the
troubles and strife of the past are over, and that he's free to love and be
loved as he truly deserves. His eyes have a spark in them that I didn't see
at first. His personality just keeps getting bigger everyday. He's gained so
much confidence in himself, as well, and has become my Hunter show horse.
We've just started doing some jumping under saddle – something he had obviously never done before… and he's doing great! I've also recently bought a cutback saddle, and am looking forward to trying out Saddle Seat riding with him, being that he is a Saddlebred and all.
He and I have accomplished so much together over the
past 11 months. And we've just grown more and more in love with each other as
each day passes. I've heard people talk about that one special horse – the
one they will always love the best, that they had such a special connection
with. I am lucky enough to have him now… my first horse, my heart, my kindred
spirit. And I can't thank all of you enough for saving his life at that
auction where he was headed for slaughter, taking him into your healing home,
and bringing him into my life. He means the world to me, and I can't express
in words the gratitude I have for everyone
who
had a part in bringing this beautiful soul into my life.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

Conquest - Saddlebred gelding aprox 16 hands and 5 yr old slaughter rescue. He had some severe neglect going on in the front hooves the trimmer said in his opinion whoever trimmed him didn't take enough toe off and put shoes on him with a long toe. He has been trimmed and was a perfect gentleman, we will continue to correct through trimmings and expect no problems . He is easy to handle on the ground and very affectionate and friendly. Rides and drives like a gentleman. | |
