Holt's Chance or HC -
aged Belgian draft (over 20) with edema purchased by a rescue who was going to euthanize him as
they had no room for him. The vet thought he would be ok and
should be given another chance to live - we purchased him from the other rescue
and he is currently in our care we are waiting for blood test results to come
back he has a healthy appetite and is currently doing well. We will keep
you updated. Saved and alive today because of the Draft Fund!! update -
blood work showed nothing major wrong- he was anemic (could be due to worms) He
was wormed with safeguard and the Edema is gone he is slowly gaining weight.
We expect a full recovery.
1-5-06 - Yesterday Holt was seen by the vet because his edema is back.
It has moved to his lower stomach and sheath area. His penis is so swollen
that he cannot retract it again. He was sedated, given an iv bantamine
shot and we cleaned the area, made sure he could still urinate by finding the
placement and the vet prescribed SMZ's and bute for 14 days. We will
keep an eye on him in case he gets worse in which case he would need to be
euthanized and if he continues to improve we will re-evaluate after the 2 week
antibiodic treatment is over. We are hosing and lubricating him daily.
Although Holt is gaining weight and is in good spirits his edema is not
responding and Holt is starting to hike his leg as he walks.
1-28-06 Holt lost his battle, he couldn't get up this morning the vet was
called immediately and the decision was made to humanely euthanize him.
